What is mold swab testing?
In some cases, there is visible mold in a home. It may be in a laundry room, under a sink, behind drywall or in a bathroom. A sample of the mold is gathered on a swab and sent to a laboratory for evaluation.
Mold swab testing vs. air quality testing?
Air quality testing is commonly performed when there is no visible mold. It is often considered the “seal of approval” on a mold remediation projects. If the air samples are within acceptable limits, then the clean up is seen as successful.
When is a good time to call for the swab sampling?
It is almost impossible to discern the type of mold present just with the naked eye. Most people insist that they can recognize mold when they see it. However, in dark, enclosed areas, mold and dirt can look very similar. Even trained professionals rely on certified test results when determining the types of mold present.
When there is visible mold, and you have mold allergies, it’s a good time for a mold swab test. The testing can pinpoint the strain and then you’ll know if your symptoms can be attributed to the mold exposure. Then it is easier to take the proper steps.

What if my test is positive for dangerous mold?
While living with mold is never a smart idea, some kinds of mold pose a unique danger. For example, Stachybotrys, or black mold, can actually kill neurons in the brain. It’s been linked to a number of incidents and has even caused deaths. Aspergillus is also very dangerous. Long-term exposure can cause significant damage to the lungs.
If you’ve discovered mold in your home and it is making you sick, you’ll need to have us clean up the microbial contamination that you’ve found. Once we’ve completed the cleanup and the air quality tests are negative, you’ll need to take steps to prevent mold re-growth in the future.
How can I prevent black mold in my apartment, house or office?
Mold growth requires moisture and warm temperatures, so the first step is the keep the environment dry and cool.
- Repair leaks. Make sure the roofs, water heaters, sinks, washers, tubs, and showers are in good condition. Long term leaks are a real problem.
- Dry leaks. Some leaks can’t be prevented. Accidents like overflowing tubs or leaking toilets just happen from time to time. Make sure to dry them right away. Call us for the right drying equipment.
- Leave the air conditioner on. When you travel for work or fun, leave the air conditioner on at home. The humidity is too high in Tallahassee and the Florida panhandle to leave your home buttoned up with no ventilation or cooling.
