Simple Indicators That You Might Have a Mold Problem

1.  Moldy Smell.  It’s a unique smell.  Even if you can’t see anything, you still know its there.

2.  Visible Microbial Growth. Dark splotches on the walls, ceiling, floors or baseboards.  Splotches on the ceiling may indicate a leaking roof or a burst pipe or condensation in ductwork. Dark patches or brown or black mold on the walls may indicate a cracked or burst pipe behind the drywall.  This may be a slow leak but the damage will only get worse.

3.  Soft Moist Spots on the Floors, Walls or Ceiling.  This might indicate that microbial growth is present.  Mold may not be visible yet but could be behind the drywall, on the supportive studs, under flooring or in the ceiling of your home.

4. Unexplained Illness.  Nagging coughing, headaches, nausea or feeling ill only when at home or in certain spaces.  These persistent allergy-type symptoms could indicate that mold is present.  The 4 groups most susceptible to mold-related illnesses are:

  • Children
  • Elderly
  • Immune Deficient
  • Pregnant Women

5.  Recent Water Event.  The spores need water to grow so a recent leak, flood or sewer back-up could have caused the appropriate water activity needed to support mold growth.

If you notice any of these signs, call now for a comprehensive Tallahassee mold inspection. Our testing is certified and comprehensive.  If there’s a problem, we’ll find it and fix it.

How to Prevent Mold

Our 10 Step Process

1. Find the Source.

We determine the source of the water intrusion.  This must be pinpointed and corrected to prevent the water intrusion from occurring again.

2. Visible Inspection of the Water Damage.

Our expert technicians inspect for visible microbial growth.  We know where to look that other mold removal companies in Tallahassee might miss.

3. Diagnostic Testing.

We have the right equipment to “sniff out” invisible mold that may be lurking behind the walls, on the stud framing and drywall. We use mold testing meters to make sure that we find it all.  If necessary, we can provide an air sample test taken by a certified mold assessor or Indoor Environmental Professional (IEP).  The IEP takes samples and tests every suspected room. All mold is not the same and we have the right tests to separate deadly mold from just nuisance mold.

4. Establish Containment.  We first want to protect your family and the rest of the home from airborne mold spores by establishing containment. This establishes a safe border for our removal work to begin.  Our highest priority is the safety of your family.  The type of containment used will vary depending on the area of contamination:

  • Source:  small areas of contamination, less than 10 sq. ft.  We bag it and remove.
  • Local: one room that we can seal off and remediate, usually 10 sq ft to 100 sq. ft.
  • Full Containment: area that require a temporary containment barrier to prevent cross contamination, used to seal of an entire room or multiple rooms.

5. Air Filtration.

We install our portable air filtration units to cleanse your air and improve the air quality in the home for your family.  Protecting your family from airborne pathogens is accomplished by establishing negative air pressure between the contaminated area and the rest of the home.

6. Remove the Mold.

Behind the safety barriers, our technicians will begin to remove the materials that are impacted by the mold.  This may include drywall, baseboards, sinks, cabinets or counters and flooring in a kitchen.  We may have to remove drywall on ceilings or insulation if a roof leak was involved.  It might involve removing tubs or fixtures in the bathroom if it has penetrated the walls due to leaking pipes.  Our technicians are skilled and take great care in preserving what can be preserved while making sure to remove any traces of mold.

7. Mold Treatment.

Once the damaged materials are removed, we use professional grade treatment and removal products, following IICRC guidelines.  The remaining surfaces are cleaned and treated.

8. Air Purification.

Once the removal and treatment is complete air purification is performed for several days.

9. Post-Remediation Air Sample Testing.

After the air purification protocol is complete, post remediation air sample testing is conducted and must be given a passing grade by the IEP.

10. Equipment Removal.

Once the post-remediation testing is complete and air samples are deemed acceptable by a certified mold assessor or IEP, containment barriers and equipment are removed.

We’ll leave you with a clean palette so that you can bring in the right contractors to replace the walls or flooring or the remodel the kitchen or bath as needed. We have great relationships with may companies so ask if you need a recommendation.

Z

The Right Practices

Ensure that the mold removal company that you are thinking about hiring will use the right practices that are safe for your family.  One examples of proper vs a less desirable practices is misting vs. HEPA vacuuming for dust/spore control.  Misting for dust/spore control introduces more moisture into the already contaminated space.  This can actually make the situation worse.  Vacuuming is effective because it removes spores that settle on surfaces.  In addition, we always use air filtration units to remove the spores from the air.
Z

The Right Credentials

Hiring a professional means they have the proper training and certifications to diagnose and treat the problem properly.  All of our technicians are WRT (Water Restoration Technician) and ASD(Applied Structural Drying) certified. Our mold technicians are AMRT (Applied Microbial Remediation Technician) certified and licensed in the State of Florida as Licesnsed Mold Remediators.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mold

Which Mold is the Most Dangerous?
All mold can trigger allergic reactions in individuals, especially newborns, elderly, pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems.  But some types can create long lasting illnesses like aspergillosis, a disease caused by exposure to aspergillus/penicillium, which is fungus growing in the lungs. The strain commonly referred to as black mold, stachybotrys chartarum, is also very dangerous and should be removed right away.
What is Black Mold?
Black mold is the common name for species, stachybotrys chartarum. It can grow in houses and it’s very toxic to humans.  The mycotoxins, the toxic chemicals that are released by molds as a defense mechanism, can trigger many symptoms in humans including mental, neurological, respiratory, circulatory, vision, skin, immune system, reproductive, fatigue, muscle pain as other health effects.  Note:  Not all mold that is black in color is stachybotrys chartarum.
Why is Mold Growing on My Wall?
The right conditions for microbial growth must have been present in the recent past.  This includes the right temperature, humidity and/or relative humidity (RH), and moisture level.  After some period of time the mold become visible to the naked eye.  For example, for the most deadly black mold, stachybotrys chartarum, it takes 7-12 days for it to become visible to the naked eye.
How Can I Tell if This Mold is Dangerous?
The only way to know for sure if the mold in your house is dangerous is to have it professionally tested by a certified inspector.  The inspector can determine the type and the level of contamination in the home by measuring the mVOCs (microbial volatile organic compounds) in the air – the gaseous waste by-products released by actively growing fungi and bacteria.
What Surface Will Mold Grow Best On?
Mold can grow best on all surfaces including porous, semi-porous and non-porous surfaces.

Mold-Related Illnesses

Which Groups are at Higher Risk for Mold-Related Reactions and Illnesses?
  • Newborns
  • Pregnant Women
  • Elderly
  • Immune-Compromised Individuals
Why are Newborns at Higher Risk?
Newborns have a lower body weight, faster respirations, increased metabolism and immature respiratory and immune systems.  If you have a newborn or infant in the home and suspect mold, call us right away.
What is the Most Common Route of Entry for Mold Exposure?
The most common route of microbial exposure is inhalation.  That’s why a common response to exposure is coughing and other upper respiratory related symptoms.

Mold Prevention

What Can I do to Prevent Mold?
Mold is always present in small amounts in our homes and businesses.  But in order to prevent dangerous microbial growth, keep surfaces and air cool enough and dry enough to prevent excessive growth.  Repair leaks right away and maintain  your climate control system properly.
How Can I Prevent Bathroom Mold?
You should take the appropriate steps to repair any plumbing leaks and to prevent freezing pipes in the winter.  This might include insulating them properly in your crawl space, flushing them before a freeze or allowing the water to drip during our rare freeze warnings. If you know that you have a leak, cracked pipe or burst pipe, you should have that repaired right away.  And lastly, always use the ventilation fan when taking hot steamy showers so that moisture doesn’t accumulate on the walls and prompt microbial growth.
How Can I Prevent Mold in my Empty Summer Home?
If you’re going to be away for lengthy period of time, you should leave the air conditioning unit operating.  Keeping a house closed up for months is just an invitation to set off mold growth.  There can be wide swings in the indoor temperature and moisture levels during your absence.  You should also have someone check on the property periodically to ensure that there are no leaks and that the a/c unit is working and draining properly.  You’ll also want to inspect the property after any big storms to ensure that there isn’t any storm or roof damage.

Mold Treatment

Can I Just Clean It With Bleach?
It is impossible to know if bleach is the proper corrective action for your problem unless we can see and test the environment.  It will depend on the type of mold, the severity of the contamination on the building materials and the size of the area involved.  Call us today and we can do the necessary analysis to put your mind at ease.
What Should I do if I Suspect Mold in My Home?
Call Tallahassee Mold Pros, we’re a well respected mold remediation company in the Tallahassee area.  We have the resources to inspect, test and remediate if it is needed in your home.  Don’t try to remove it yourself as this can disturb and disperse the spores and actually might make the problem worse.  Don’t try to treat it yourself.  It’s impossible to tell with the naked eye the type of mold that you have.  Certified scientific mold testing is required to determine the type and the level of contamination.
Can I Treat This Mold Myself?
If you suspect that you have mold in your home, you should have it tested by a professional mold inspector.  Only they have the skill, training and testing equipment to properly identify the type of mold and the levels of contamination that might exist in your home.  If it’s determined that significant levels of mold are present, we’ll recommend the appropriate treatment, Do It Yourself or professional.
Do We Have to Move Out if We Have Mold?
Once the mold testing is complete and the problem is determined to be localized in one or two rooms, we can usually create a containment area and enclose the area that needs remediation.  We also establish a negative air pressure differential between the work area and the surrounding areas to prevent contaminants from leaving the work zone.  If the spores are present throughout the home or business we’ll make the appropriate recommendation at that time.
Can My Ionizer or Air Purifier Remove the Mold Spores from the Air?
Most commercially available air purifiers only deodorize the air; they aren’t designed to remove the tiny mold spores that are commonly identified in a water damaged environment.  These spores can be as small as 2-20 microns (a micron is one millionth of a meter).
What is HEPA Filtration?
HEPA is High Efficiency Particulate Air.  It can remove 99.7% of all particles to 0.3 microns in diameter.
Can I Use a Vacuum with HEPA Filtration to Remove Mold in My Home?
HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filtration is effective in removing airborne particles but any building materials that are contaminated with mold growth should be removed by an expert.  Proper containment of the molded materials and proper air filtration must be used to prevent spreading the spores to other areas of the house.  Using a regular vacuum can actually stir up the spores and spread them to other parts of your home or business.
